GIQ Coal Inductions Have Commenced

Published 13 Jul 2011

As of July 1st 2011 the ‘Generic Induction’ as it was known to thousands of coal industry people has changed to GIQ Coal.
Towards the end of last year the Government published a new Standard for Training in the Queensland coal industry (Standard 11) which changes the way inductions are done. The body responsible for managing the current GI Safety Induction, The Mining Industry Skills Centre had been busy determining how the GI program needed to change in order to satisfy the new requirements.
The ‘old’ Induction covered two (2) Units of Competency while the ‘new’ Induction covers six (6) Units of Competency. After months of consultation with Industry, Government, Unions and Contractors, a way forward had been resolved.
The biggest change will be the requirement to have previous suitable experience BEFORE being allowed to attend the New Generic. This will be no problem if you are already in the mining industry or a heavy industry.
People with a current Generic and are continuing to work in a similar job in the industry will be able to refresh their induction when it’s due to expire.

We currently have Renewal/Bridging programs as well as New Induction programs available. The relevant forms to secure a booking can be found on our Courses page.
